iQ Font

Two typographers, Pierre & Damien, and a pro race pilot, Stef van Campenhoud, collaborated to design a font with a car. Incredible maneuvering and some coloured dot tracking lead to the final product which I have to admit is impressive and can be downloaded from the website. Incomparably in terms of originality for car advertising campaigns though this may be because it is the only font-based campaign for a car I have seen so far.

Sam Winston

Sam Winston

Sam Winston is one of those artist whose work is difficult to file away in just one category due to the shear range of the stuff. His “letter art”, spanning a chunk of art types from sculptures to drawings and books, is a result of his exploration of language and our understanding of words in their roles as messengers and informers.

Google Maps Typography

Google Map Typography

Over the course of several months from October 2008 to April 2009 Rhett Dashwood spent his free time scrutinizing Google Maps to find letters within the world around him, making his task more difficult for himself by limiting his search to the state of Victoria, Australia.

A strange project mixing traditional and modern elements which seem immiscible, proving how very compatible they are.

Ed Nacional

Ed Nacional

Ed Nacional is a graphic designer who can’t live without ‘type, grids, flea markets, stoop sales, book stores, mixtapes and good food’. Unsurprisingly his work is often typography-based, studying the diversity and basics of the different forms in a variety of unexpected ways. He also works with graphic design in the more traditional sense, his portfolio being predominantly minimalistic and structured in its content.

Tie-pography, a recent project by Ed Nacional, is a typeface constructed completely of ties from various source. This unusual take on an the fundamentals is fun and interesting, with the opportunity for it to develop and grow in the future. A great project to keep an eye on.

Sabato Urciuoli – Update

Sabato Urciuoli recently updated his website with some new work, as well as redesigning the interface to be slick, and beautifully minimalistic.

Sabato Urciuoli

Sabato Urciuoli

Sabato Urciuoli is a graphic designer who is not afraid to explore outside of the barded-wire fence that surrounds, and limits, many forms of graphic design. Sabato experiments in many different ways with graphic design, typography, photography and even some music. One of his projects, ‘Play with paper/sound calendar’, builds music from a calendar displaying your bad days.

While Sabato is just one of the many graphic designers in a sea of talent, he is still a graphic designer who stands out, pushing his way into to the limelight with his unusual work. In my opinion, truly breath-taking work.

Shown is Typediagrama, a project by Sabato exploring the use of chart formats in the creation type.
